GHOSTS OF KOA by Colby R. Rice – Book Review

New Sci-Fi/Fantasy Novelist and Screenwriter, Colby R. Rice has a great debut novel on her hands.

Ghosts of Koa, the first novel in The Books Of Ezekiel, is set in a dystopian, urban-fantasy world dominated by political and social unrest of two factions. The Civil and Alchemic Order are those factions, human and magic (Alchemy) wielding others. Despite a truce between them, the behind the scene machinations of politicians and insurgents (Ghosts) threaten what civility exists. In the midst of violence, betrayal and daily survival is our teenage hero, Zeika Anon. Fiercely loyal and cunning, we quickly find out that Family is important to her, especially her young sister Manja. The world building, political climate and adventure of Ghosts Of Koa is measured and demonstrated through the relationship of these two siblings. I love the dynamic between the two as Zeika strives to protect her sister who, despite her young age is clever and talented in her own right. Their relationship is the impetus that gives Zeika the strength and courage to make the hard choices of survival.

Ghosts Of Koa has magic involved but it is not overly, allowing the actions and behavior of the characters to breathe and live on their own merit. I could and would to see this visually as a movie, T.V mini-series and or web-series. If you love engaging characters, detailed and fast paces storytelling then Ghosts Of Koa is a must read! Go support Colby R. Rice as she brings you more in The Books of Ezekiel.
